Dressed for Success: Where Fashion Meets Empowerment
Fashion is often seen as a way to express ourselves, but what if it could also help change someone’s life? For women preparing to enter the workforce, having the right outfit can make a difference in how confident and prepared they feel.
Founded in 1966 by Nancy Lublin, Dress for Success is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping women achieve economic independence through professional clothing, career development, and support. What first started in a church basement in Manhattan and an inheritance of $5000 from Nancy’s great-grandfather, Dress for Success has grown into an international organization that has helped more than 1.3 million women worldwide.
For many women, including myself, finding affordable, professional clothing can be quite a challenge, especially when it comes to those who are unemployed or experiencing financial difficulties, or in my case, a broke college student. Dress for success removes this barrier by providing clothing appropriate for job interviews and the workplace.
“Keep pushing and never give up. If you don’t give up, you won’t fail, but if you give up, you’ve failed.” Said Kennedy, one of many clients Dress for Success has helped.

The organization offers much more than clothing, including career coaching classes, networking opportunities, and support for personal growth and leadership. Dress for Success gives women the resources to build successful careers and become financially independent.
One thing I find most inspiring about this organization is how it uses fashion as a tool for empowerment. I have always seen clothing as something more than what we wear. I believe clothing can be used as a beautiful and powerful form of self-expression, and can even become an influential tool in many movements, cultures, and traditions. Fashion can influence how we feel about ourselves and influence others to find their true form.
From a public relations perspective, Dress for Success also demonstrates the importance of having a meaningful mission behind a brand.
“Dress for Success worldwide is to empower women to achieve economic mobility and self-sufficiency by providing a network of support, professional attire, and development tools to help women thrive at work and in life.” (Dress for Success Mission Statement)

Through partnerships, volunteers, and community involvement, the organization spreads awareness about women’s empowerment while encouraging others to get involved in the community. The Dress for Success website offers volunteer, career, and donation opportunities, along with a blog and feature stories of women helped by the non-profit. By sharing the stories of women whose lives have been impacted, Dress for Success demonstrates how effective PR can inspire others to support a cause.
Just for Success reminds us that fashion doesn’t simply have to be about the latest trends or designer brands; sometimes it can be as simple as a professional outfit that can help someone feel confident enough to take the next step toward their future.
